Online video streaming platform YouTube Kids & Family has premiered the second season of Africa’s first animated kid superhero series titled Super Sema. The series follows the adventures of the titular extraordinary young girl, Sema, who lives in the neo-African-futuristic community of Dunia.
Produced by Oscar-winning actress and New York Times best-selling author Lupita Nyong’o, the new season features 11-minute episodes and sees Sema and her friends take on more exciting, world-changing adventures to save their town Dunia from an evil AI robot.
According to the producers, the series episodes will be followed by Let’s Technovate with Super Sema educational vlogs that will see Sema and her friends explore fun projects and experiments that kids can try at home to learn more about the science behind Sema’s tech innovations.
In addition, the series will feature music videos with full-length versions of the series’s catchy songs and round out during Friday’s new release.
Super Sema is Africa’s first kid superhero franchise, and it was written by four-time BAFTA winner Claudia Lloyd (Mr Bean) and executive produced by Lupita Nyong’o, who also voiced the role of Mama Dunia in the series.
The series will be available on the Super Sema YouTube channel, which has garnered over 40m views since 2021 and has also acquired licensing deals for toys from Just Play, publishing deals from Penguin Random House and Bendon, and apparel from Bentex.
The series was created and produced by Kukua, a Nairobi-based children’s entertainment company.
Daniel Haack is the creative lead on Super Sema for YouTube Originals.
