The 15th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) jury, under the custodianship of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), has removed Katlego Maboe as a candidate in the Best TV Presenter category following cheating scandal allegations. Although the Best TV Presenter category requires the public to vote for a winner, the NFVF announced that Maboe would be removed from the selection.
A released statement by the agency said that the removal of Maboe was based on concerns raised regarding the candidate’s public vote nomination. The agency then said that after discussions, the jury had decided to revoke his nomination, which would be effective immediately. Maboe’s voting code would also be removed from the USSD line, said NFVF. Maboe’s nomination was for his work under Cardova Productions for his role as a TV Presenter for Tropika Island of Treasure Curacao.
Following the cheating scandal, Katlego Maboe has been removed from various shows, including SABC 3’s morning show Expresso, also produced by Cardova Productions. Maboe wife had publicly accused the renowned TV presenter of being unfaithful, which, through his actions, led to her womb being damaged. Katlego has since admitted to his adulterous activities, which has sent the couple through a legal battle. The case is still ongoing.
The awards show will take place on the 22nd of May on the SABC 3 channel and DSTV’s Mzansi Magic channel. The organisers announced that the show’s red carpet would be one hour long, starting from 18h30. The main show will begin at 19h00.
