The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has announced that Moshoeshoe Monare will be replacing Phathiswa Magopeni as the new Head of News following Magopeni’s dismissal.
Magopeni was dismissed after a malicious breakdown involving the SABC CEO Madoda Mxakwe and SABC Chairman Bongumusa Makhathini, in which Magopeni accused them of editorial interference.
The public broadcaster stated that the accusations Magopeni laid against Madoda Mxakwe and Bongumusa Makhathini were unsubstantiated following an internal review.
From June 2022, Moshoeshoe Monare, who is currently the Managing Director of Operations and Corporate Services at Arena Holdings, will assume the position of SABC Group Executive for news and current affairs.
Monare has acquired a national diploma in journalism from Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), a BA Honours degree, a post-graduate diploma in journalism from the University of Witwatersrand, and an LLB from UNISA. He also completed a management advancement programme at Wits Business School.
With over 25 years of knowledge in the broadcasting media industry, Monare has also served on various boards, including Tiso Blackstar, the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) and Publishers Support Services.
Early in his career, Monare was a reporter for the Pretoria News, The Star and the Sunday Times newspapers.
He has occupied senior editorial positions at The Sunday Independent as editor, deputy editor of the Mail & Guardian, group political editor of Independent Newspapers, executive editor of The Star and managing editor of The Sunday Times and The Times.
Monare served as a member of the adjudication panel of the Press Council and is a former deputy chairperson of the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF).
