Online subscription Video-On-Demand (VOD) service company, Showmax, is said to have reduced its pricing in South Africa by 20%, taking the mobile subscription fee from R49 (US$3.45) per month to R39 (US$2.75) per month.
According to reports, the Showmax mobile subscription plan price is now the same as the mobile offering of its main competitor, Netflix. While the Netflix plan has not officially launched, the giant is currently testing two mobile products to select visitors to the service’s signup page. The Mobile Plan is priced at R39 (US$2.75), while the Mobile+ Plan is at R59 (US$4.16) per month.
A statement by the Multichoice Group CEO for Connected Video, Yolisa Phahle read, the Group understands that customers are under pressure at the moment. Therefore, the organisation believes that mobile customers will much appreciate the change in pricing.
Pricing for the standard Showmax plan will, however, remain the same at R99 (US$6.97) per month, Showmax Pro at R445 (US$31.34) per month and Showmax Pro Mobile at R225 (US$15.85).
The reduction has also been extended to other countries. Additionally, the online subscription company will be releasing a slate of Showmax Originals this year. So far, the company has released ‘Tali’s Baby Diary’, a small-town psychological thriller; ‘DAM’, a Kenyan Police procedural crime and justice film and the reality series, ‘Laycan’, Nigeria’s first Showmax Original.
Upcoming to the channels includes a neo-noir murder mystery from the Cape Flats called Skemerdans, Uthando Lodumo, a Babes Wodumo and Mampuntsha reality show, Blood Psalms, an epic series based on the ancient African mythology and Showmax’s first international reality tv format, Temptation Island.
