The director of Anikulapo, a Nigerian epic fantasy film, has disclosed that the Netflix-distributed film will begin preproduction soon for a spin-off series.
According to director Kunle Afolayan, a spin-off series from the film will commence preproduction in the coming week. Taking to his Instagram, Afolayan confirmed the news to fans that a spin-off series was well underway.
In an Instagram live chat with members of the cast, Afolayan shared that the film was initially intended to be a series, but the former was created as an audience test.
Set in the ancient Oyo empire, Anikulapo follows an ambitious young man’s quest for fame and fortune. It tells the story of a man seeking greener pastures, but unfolding events and his affair with the king’s wife, he encounters his untimely death, and with Akala, a mystical bird believed to give and take life.
The Netflix original starring Kunle Remi, Bimbo Ademoye, Sobowale, Adebowale Adedayo, Bimbo Ademoye, Kareem Adepoju, Adedeji Aderemi, Adeoye Adewale and an enviable list of veteran Yoruba-language film stars. The film debuted on the streaming platform on October 1 to instant acclaim from critics and film lovers.
The film also maintained an impressive top 10 spot in over five countries, including the United Kingdom, Kenya, Nigeria and the Bahamas.
