MultiChoice, the pay-TV operator, is taking steps to curb concurrent streaming and password sharing on its DStv Now platform.
Nyiko Shiburi, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, pointed out that all streaming providers, including DStv, face password sharing and piracy challenges.
“The above mentioned has a devasting effect on the entertainment industry’s overall growth. As a result, streaming service providers are obligated to take action to address these activities.”
According to Shiburi, customers will be limited to streaming DStv on one device at a time starting March 22, 2022.
Subscribers will still be able to watch content they’ve already downloaded on a second device.
“We will not limit the number of people who use a login,” MultiChoice revealed, “but we will limit the number of users who can stream at the same time.”
“We will be taking measures to limit concurrent streaming as part of our continuous efforts to combat password sharing and piracy while continuing to provide you with the best viewing experience.”
The adjustment will affect all DStv packages across Africa. However, MultiChoice also emphasised that this will not affect pricing.
According to MultiChoice, the change will not impact Showmax customers, as it only applies when streaming DStv.
Offline viewing and the maximum number of devices you can register for streaming remain unchanged. One is still permitted to register up to four devices.
