Multichoice has announced the debut of its first African-focused telenovela channel – “Novela Magic” – via the DSTV platform. The channel is set to provide subscribers with various African content exploring African cultures, languages, and African diversity through original homegrown stories. The channel will be airing content from Monday to Sunday, with the last programme ending at 21h30.
M-Net Channel Director for East and Southern Channel, Timothy Okwaro, said that he believed the growth and success of local storytelling had been the motivator of Multichoice’s decision to launch an African telenovela channel.
M-Net has been bringing African talent and content to the African continent for over 30years. Those compelling stories capture viewers and showcase the vast talent within the continent, said Okwaro. M-Net is committed to continuing this legacy of bringing to audiences the best stories Africa has to offer, highlighting African themes that resonate and engage DSTV viewers.
The exciting collection to look forward to includes the likes of Unbroken, Zuba Forbidden and Battleground. The stories are of different origins, with Unbroken produced in Nigeria. The love story follows love-crazed Tivdo, who plans to marry Jesse; however, Tivdo is involved in a tragic accident, leaving him paralysed.
Zuba is Zambi’a first telenovela. The film tells a story of a rural girl who finds employment as a maid in a rich family where she falls in love with the son of the house. “Battleground” is about how far a family would sacrifice for each other when an unfortunate tragedy leads to an exposition of secrets, shady business deals and media scrutiny.
Nollywood’s production, Forbidden, follows a story of a secret affair that ends up being exposed by colleagues via social media.
