Mr John Ugbe, the Chief Executive Officer of Multichoice Nigeria, was sworn in as the 14th Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Ugbe emerged as the Chairman BON following a highly contested election, which took place at the Coronation Hall of the Kano State Government House, Kano, earlier this month. The election took place during BON’s 75th General Assembly and 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony in the Nigerian capital city of Abuja included Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the Executive Governor of Kano State of Nigeria, Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Assistant to the Nigerian President on Media and Publicity, Dr Olalekan Olumuyiwa Fadolapo – President of AAAN and Prince Nduka Obaigbena, CEO of Thisday Media Group to name but a few.
Thanking BON, Ugbe said, “I wish to convey my heartfelt gratitude to members of BON for believing in my vision and deeming me worthy of being elected as Chairman of BON. Again, I thank you for the honour and wish to assure you that I will do everything in my power to achieve our shared goal for BON.”
He also mentioned that his administration would prioritise the growth and development of the organisation’s members, among other things. “We wish to reaffirm our commitment to sourcing training opportunities for BON members to develop their technical knowledge and competence skills.” We will enable training opportunities for our member stations by collaborating with local and international partners. The training programme as mentioned above is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2022, with the goal of training 1,000 members in the first year and scaling it up in the second.”
BON, established in 1973, is Nigeria’s umbrella union of public and private broadcasters from the analogue and digital spectrums.
