Entertainment group, Multichoice, will be launching a pop-up movie channel called M-Net Movies Afro-Cinema which will be dedicated to celebrating Africa Day on 25 May 2021. The channel will be showcasing a variety of content from across the continent.
As announced in media, Afro-Cinema Channel will debut from 21 May to 30 May and will be available to all premium package customers across the continent. Additionally, the channel will be made on DSTV’s Gotv Plus and Max platforms. According to Multichoice Group, the Afro-Cinema Channel has been created with an intent to showcase Africa’s cultural diversity, which can be seen from the content produced by filmmakers from different parts of the continent.
Speaking about the channel, Yolisa Phahle, the Multichoice Group CEO and General Entertainment and Connected Video, said that Africa Day is about celebrating African unity and success and acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead. The film industry has suffered a lot during the pandemic as filmmakers could not create content to receive revenue, highlighted Phahle.
On Africa Day, Multichoice Group would like to celebrate the resilience and talent of the continent’s film industry with the launch of African films. From the comfort of their homes, audiences will be able to enjoy Afro-Cinema, Phahle added.
The lineup for the pop-up channel includes ‘Heritage Africa’ and ‘Oko Kε Akueteh’ from Ghana. Nigeria filmmakers will bring ‘Sunset in Makoko’ and ‘Joba’; ‘Payback’ from Zambia; ‘Ensulo’ from Kenya, ‘The Train of Salt and Sugar’ from Mozambique, ‘94 Terror’ from Uganda, lastly ‘Back of the Moon’ from South Africa.
