According to a BMA source, the MultiChoice Group indicated its plans to launch a new Afrikaans TV series in partnership with France’s Canal+ as part of a global co-production.
With the film and television co-productions market in South Africa at its beginning stage, the fate for locally created series with international participants is encouraging.
MUltichoice’s Group’s new Executive Head of Programming said that although this is the beginning stages of co-production of film and TV series in the country, there is always room to explore new collaborations with the rest of the world.
MultiChoice and M-Net are searching for terms of international co-productions; she stated, “creators always present what they think we embrace – being that it was approved the previous year – yet we want to improve. As a broadcaster, we are also limited on ideas; the concepts are embedded with individuals who supply us with content.
“Content producers are the ones who will elevate us by telling stories that we are not broadcasting,” she added.
M-Net’s head of local content and independent films, Kaye Ann Williams, stated that pay-TV broadcaster is searching for crime content and needs to incorporate comedy, like psychological thrillers and action.
Our collaboration with Canal+ will see MultiChoice and our producers benefit from the partnership through the Canal+ brand that possesses global distribution rights. Additionally, Canal+ is keen on international sales and distribution; this is where we will recover, and the producers will also benefit.
