In 2019 Arthur Sebela created a docu-series that would follow the development of the music genre, amapiano, by interviewing some of the pioneers and participants of the genre and some music veterans and insiders. Before its debut, Arthur Sebela received a court order which restricted MTV Base from broadcasting the documentary.
Liyadlal’iPiano documentary was shot in 2019 and now has been made available for broadcast following the legal dispute that arose before its debut. Previously marketed as ‘Behind the Amapiano Movement’, Liyadlal’iPiano unpacks the story behind the genre and dives into the origin and insights of the amapiano lifestyle and culture.
In a press release back in 2019, Monde Twala, the Former Vice President For Youth, Music and BET at Viacom, said that MTV Base led Gqom Nation and now leaps ahead with the Behind the Amapiano Movement. MTV Base continues to foster talent, music, and street culture for lovers of music and dance. The Amapiano wave is here to entertain and showcase the freshest sound taking Mzansi by storm, said Twala.
The genre has grown drastically since it became mainstream in 2018/19. Amapiano has been globally embraced by some of the worlds most prominent musicians such as Usher, Diddy, Alicia Keys and many other artists. The genre has opened up performance and collaborations with artists from all over the continent and worldwide. Liyadlal’iPiano airs every Thursday and Friday at 13h00 CAT on MTV Base and is available for viewing MTV Base Africa’s YouTube channel.
