MTN South Africa has emerged as the Most Valuable Brand in the country for 2022 in the Kantar BrandZ ranking. This comes after the telecom operator increased its brand value by 85 per cent to US$3.7 billion year-on-year.
In a statement, Charles Molapisi, MTN SA’s chief executive, said that MTN was working hard to transform the business from a telecommunications company to a technology company.
“We are very proud of our performance, which demonstrates the hard work undertaken over the past year. Not only are we embarking on a future-ready transformation and expansion strategy, but we have also been investing heavily in disruptive technologies to transform our brand from a telco into a techco,” Molapisi said.
The report has indicated that MTN SA’s brand value jump four places to rank number one for the first time. In April, MTN was also recognised as Most Valuable Brand in South Africa by Brand Finance.
Molapisi mentioned that MTN had to build what it could deliver, counting cloud capabilities and machine learning capabilities. In February, MTN, which had a US$16 billion market value, revealed its new business strategy, Ambition 2025, with the goal of becoming a dominant provider of digital solutions in Africa.
Molapisi said: “There are aspects we need to build to prepare ourselves for the technology migration. We are morphing, and there’s a lot of focus around how we prepare ourselves to become this technology business in the future.”
