Showmax, an African video streaming service owned by Multichoice, has announced the release of its first-ever original title in Ghana, dubbed ‘ENO’, premiering in March 2022.
The 13-part drama series is set in Accra and follows Abena Baafi, a single mother who is determined to meddle in the lives of her three daughters by leading them towards wealthy suitors. But, on the other hand, her ‘girls’ have their own minds, and a mother’s fantasy quickly turns into a daughter’s nightmare.
ENO stars Gloria Osei-Sarfo (The Perfect Picture – Ten Years Later) as Abena, with Ghana Movies Awards nominee Esi Hammond (Rumours), Miss Malaika 2018 Mariam Owusu-Poku and Emelia Asiedu as her three daughters.
Shirley Frimpong-Manso and Ken Attoh, both award-winning filmmakers, are the director and producer of ENO, respectively. The couple and their production company, Sparrow Studios, are behind some of Ghana’s most well-known titles, including Dede, a popular Ghanaian telenovela that earned Shirley an award for Best Director at the 2021 Ghana Movie Awards; The Perfect Picture and its sequel The Perfect Picture: Ten Years Later; and the hit rom-com Potato Potahto, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.
ENO, according to Shirley, is a story that will “test your beliefs and keep you glued from the very first scene.”
Ken, her producer, agrees that ENO fits for a first Ghanaian Showmax Original and that viewers will love it since it is a “visually entertaining, drama-filled, and completely relatable African story with Ghanaian nuances.”
Shirley confesses that working on ENO as the first Showmax Original in Ghana is both exciting and demanding, and its success will open doors for many Ghanaian filmmakers.
ENO joins other Showmax Originals across Africa, including Kenya’s hit police procedural Crime and Justice and the recently launched drama series Single Kiasi, to name a few.
