Attempting to regulate broadcasting as one did in the past is incomprehensible, especially now with satellite and the internet providing local and international content globally. Moreover, online video content providers are not explicitly included in the traditional definition of broadcasting, but they are not explicitly excluded either. One could even argue that these online video streaming services have channels comparable to broadcasting stations, implying that the same regulations and codes should govern them.
Traditional approaches to broadcasting regulation have been particularly challenged by rapid convergence and technological changes. While a more comprehensive regulatory framework for OTT platforms is required, it is not without controversy. As a result, BMA will host an online industry forum to discuss the “Effective Regulation Of Online Broadcasting And OTT Streaming Services In Africa.”
According to Mr Benjamin Pius, BMA’s Chief Executive Officer and Convener, the forum will examine how new online and streaming media formats vary from traditional media. The session will take place on the Zoom platform on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at 10h00 GMT.
The forum sets to address gaps created by convergence and digitisation stemming from inevitable changes in the way audiences access news, information, entertainment, cultural and educational programming.
