Directed by Maggie Morgan, the Egyptian documentary ‘From Meir, to Meir will be available on Netflix from 7 July 2022.
Shot over a span of twelve years, Morgan set out to interview different villagers during her visits to Meir, upper Egypt, in order to learn the history of the village.
The documentary recently landed its world premiere at Aswan International Women’s Film Festival, where it won the NUT Award for Best Egyptian Film Supporting Women’s Work.
The film will also be featured at the 22nd Festival du Cinéma Africain de Khouribga (FCAK) in Morocco.
‘From Meir, to Meir’ stars Shahira Loza, Nasser Loza, Romany Abdeltawab, and Samir El Qommos.
The documentary is produced by The Pianola and features Zaki Aref and Shady Fikry as DoPs, with music composed by Muller Hany.
Mad Solutions handle the distribution of the documentary.
Filmed between 2008 and 2020, From Meir, to Meir follows Morgan’s journey to the titular village of Meir in Assiut, where her grandparents were born and lived, until they left for Alexandria.
Viewers will learn about Meir’s remarkable history through a series of interviews and the director’s own personal archives.
The village has produced some influential individuals, including Dr Benjamin Behman, founder of the Behman Psychiatric Hospital.
The documentary’s focus is not Meir’s history but the lives, troubles, and traditions of those who still live in the small town, most of whom dream of leaving home in search of green pastures overseas.
Netflix will release the Egyptian documentary From Meir, to Meir on 7 July 2022.
