Under his rule in the 1980s, his secret police killed more than 40,000 citizens and abducted, tortured and raped more than 200,000 innocent people.
After many years of his dictatorship, he fled to Senegal and was able to live there freely for over 20 years. However, in 2013, an incredible turn occurred; a former head of state was convicted of crimes against humanity in Africa for the first time in history. Hissene Habre was sentenced to life imprisonment by the courts. The hundreds of thousands of victims were comforted and finally felt safe.
After only five years in prison, Hissene Habre suddenly died of the Covid-19 virus. The people wanted to see him pay for his crimes and now feel no compensation for his crimes and all his committed deaths.
