MultiChoice Group has signed an agreement with Walt Disney Co Africa to distribute its streaming platform on the DStv set-top boxes.
Disney+ will be launched in South Africa on 18 May and will be available on MultiChoice’s DStv Explora Ultra decoders on the release date.
MultiChoice launched the Explora Ultra in November 2020, and it allows third-party platforms to offer their services via DStv.
Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are already available on Explora Ultra as additional apps, including Showmax, a MultiChoice streaming service.
In a statement released by MultiChoice, they indicated that DStv subscribers will receive exclusive contract packages and bundle deals. Disney stated that it would provide more details closer to the release date.
DStv also indicated that the new contract with Disney+ will not affect Disney channels already carried on its satellite content bouquets after the launch of Disney+.
Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice Group CEO, said, “the partnership with Disney+ provides an expanded choice of content, which will be easily accessible and convenient for subscribers and payment, with the DStv Explora Ultra as an enabler.”
Last week, Disney revealed that the streaming service will be available in resolutions of up to 4K, allowing subscribers to stream using four devices simultaneously.
Disney+ subscription plan is US$7.58 per month or US$75.78 per year, although Disney stated that it will offer a significant discount to annual subscribers at the launch.
Disney+ will be joining other streaming services already available in South Africa, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and BritBox.
