Devilsdorp, Showmax’s first Original true-crime docu-series, will focus on a string of cult murders that occurred in South Africa between 2012 and 2016. The Krugersdorp Killings, commonly known as the Appointment Murders, are the subject of the series.
It builds on the international streaming trend of actual crime docu-series, which has captivated audiences worldwide thanks to shows like Making a Murderer. Devilsdorp, on the other hand, takes this genre to our doorstep by focusing on South African crimes. Devilsdorp, the culmination of an 18-month research process, proves once again that fact is stranger than fiction, especially in South Africa, according to director David Enright.
“This is the account of the events that shook an entire community and forever affected the lives of those who were involved, particularly the victims’ families. What began as a group of devoted Christians attempting to assist a former satanist in escaping the satanic church turned into a violent spree involving a murderous mother, two children, and a cult with more victims than members. It may all seem impossible to believe, yet it happened.”
Captain Ben Booysen, the chief investigating officer, and Gerrit Roberts, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions and victims’ families and individuals who knew the perpetrators, provide firsthand comments in the series. Journalists who covered the crimes also offer their perspectives. Devilsdorp is a four-part series that will premiere on Showmax on July 29. Due to the subject matter, the series has a 16-year-old rating.
