The Global Partnership for Ethiopia (GPE), a unique purpose acquisition company licenced to operate telecom services in Ethiopia, has named former Airtel Managing Director for Uganda Anwar Soussa as Managing Director (MD) of Safaricom in Ethiopia. Soussa, who left Airtel Uganda in May 2016, is now the Managing Director of Vodacom DRC and Chairperson of Vodacash (M-PESA), a role he has held since 2017.
By driving huge operational performance gains, he cemented Vodacom DRC as the largest Vodacom operation outside of South Africa, breaking the US$ 500 million milestone in service revenue for the first time in 2020. Anwar will lead the Ethiopian Operating Company on behalf of the Global Partnership for Ethiopia Consortium, which compromises Vodacom Group, Vodafone Group, Sumitomo Corporation, and CDC Group. He will be in charge of carrying out the consortium’s mission to have a transformative economic and social impact on Ethiopia and improve the lives of the country’s 112 million people.
He will devise strategies and plans to ensure high-quality, low-cost mobile and internet connectivity, allowing millions more Ethiopians to benefit from superior telecommunications services.
Anwar has also held senior management positions at MTN and Digicel and was the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel in Uganda and Chad before joining Vodacom, among other carriers. He is a Greek native who graduated from the American College of Greece (Deree) with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s degree in Marketing from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
